“The point at which a young person discovers that they have a real passion for something and perhaps even a particular talent for it, is a hugely important moment in their development. The arts have a crucial role to play in helping young people discover their gifts and realise their full potential. That is why it is so important to ensure we offer them the best opportunities for creative learning and discovery and Artis is committed to this.”

Kenneth Tharp is Director of the Africa Centre in London, and patron of and former Chief Executive of The Place, the UK’s premier centre for contemporary dance. Kenneth trained at The Place’s London Contemporary Dance School, and his 25-year performing career included the internationally renowned London Contemporary Dance Theatre (1981-1994) and Kim Brandstrup’s Arc Dance Company (1994-2005). He has also worked extensively as a choreographer, teacher and director. In 2003, he was made an OBE in recognition of his services to dance, and he was named in the 2010 Powerlist of Britain’s 100 most influential black people.
